Mayor of Lambeth comes to Clapham

Junior volleyball at Giants

Izmir secondary school joins local tournament

June ended with an extremely busy weekend for Giants Volleyball Club with events spread from their home at Clapham Leisure Centre in the London Borough of Lambeth to the Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park. The climax came on Sunday with a four team youth tournament at the leisure centre with special guests, a touring secondary school team from Ekin College, Izmir, Turkey.

Guest of honour, Mr İbrahim Doğuş has been Mayor of Lambeth only since April this year but, of Turkish origin himself, was made to feel at home by the presence of the team from western Turkey. Its players were slightly older than most of the others participating on the day and certainly possessed sufficiently greater volleyball skills to win the competition but the home club, Giants, the local Macaulay Primary School coached by Giants’ junior coach, Orhan Colak and the juniors of West London's Polonia V C competed well and ensured that all 52 of them enjoyed their afternoon.

The club is grateful to everyone who ensured the event was so successful, no mean achievement with over a hundred players away at the Copper Box tournament and coming the day after participating in a local festival and organising their regular open air sessions on Clapham Common.
